My first goal of twenty-fourteen

This year is not even a month old and already I'm surprising myself!
I have set my first goal. I'm so proud of myself!
This is so unlike me. The goal is so unlike me!

Why I'm so over the moon?

I worked out! And I know, about a year ago I wrote a similar blog, about working out and getting in shape. And it ended.. Well I don't know how it ended. Because it didn't really start.
But this time I have a goal. A real goal. And without a goal I'm not moving an inch from my comfy couch.

My goal: A 5k business run and I have 45 days to train for it.

Why I signed up? I don't know. Well actually, I didn't sign up myself.

I was chatting with a sweet and over enthusiastic colleague who is a wee bit crazy (she gets up a 6AM to run 10k before work!) and she got me so worked up that she signed me up!

And I let her.

You may think I'm such a push over, and in some cases you would be right, but this girl.. Whenever she's in her zone she could sell heels to a person without feet! Trust me, She's that good.
So yeah, I willingly let myself get pushed over. Not all the way, I let her sign me up for the shortest route: 5k. The longest is 21,5k and I could never, in my wildest dreams imagine myself completing that route alive. With my lungs still in my body. And still be able to cross that finish line on my own strength. Scratch that; And still be able to cross that finish line period. So I felt somewhat confident about the 5k. After all, I still had about 5 months to train for it.

Every day I walked past that list my name on it. And every day I looked at my name on that list. With the 5k behind it.
It might sound like I am exaggerating, but for the record: I basically donate my tuition to the gym. I still went occasionally, but ever since I got the promotion I started working til late and then I didn't have the energy anymore to go. And then it got colder, and darker. And, and, and...

Until it was the new year and there were only 45 days left, instead of 5 months!

Trust me. Many times I thought of taking myself of that damned list, but I didn't want to seem like a drop out. Or at least not the first drop out. But all of the other "victims" were too psyched about it, so I left things as they were. As time passed I tried  make up excuses or even tried to plan a concert the night before so I could wiggle myself out of it but the odds just weren't in my favor. I even tried to mentally stall time, perhaps I had this undiscovered gift. But no. I'm just plain ol' Jazz that has to get her a** off the couch and in some sweat pants and out on the street.

I have also said many times "Tomorrow" (Just like the song). And then it became tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after... But my couch has such a great attraction on me...

On the presumption of " be the best I can be" I already, totally unrelated, started to change my diet. Less snacks, less sweets, less fast food. I even gave up my ultimate snack: salted popcorn. More veggies, dairy, wholesome food and breafast!
I'm not a breakfast type of girl. I prefer lying in bed for another 10 to 15 minutes than to get up and put some energy in my body. My bed has that same attraction on me..

Breakfast can be indeed fast! So I bought me a cute little blender (0.5 liters) a ton of fresh green veggies at the market and a pack of yoghurt.
I really do love fresh spinah, but didn't it could be that tasty! Blend it up with some yoghurt, banana an chia seed and you got yourself a halthe, filling and easy breakfast in literally 3 minutes.

Holy ***, I start to sound like a sales person from Tell Sell!

Ok, rewind. No, it doesn't make you instantly lose weight, and it doesn't give insane abs overnight. It's just tasty. Really tasty. And it lasts me all through lunch. What more can a girl ask for?
So. Besides me blending up everything I can lay my hands on I still had that teeny weeny issue of having absolutely no stamina. And my personal D-day growing closer and closer. No excuses.
So I did the unthinkable. I went to the gym. I can't even remember the last time I went! I signed up for a class in Body Combat. Nothing serious, just an hour of kicking and punching in the air and women under the impression that they are the next Jean-Claude van Damme. Yeah. Ok, I can do that. The warming up started pretty intense, it's all on a high energy level. So I gave it my all. The running and the jumping and kicking and screaming, I loved it. The kicking and screaming came very easy, I was already a pro at this by the time I was ten. I think it was hard to see I was completely new at this sporting thingy.

After a good while there was this little 30 second break. I drank a bit of water, I have to stay hydrated of course. And I made a futile attempt in wiping away all that sweat. Man, I have never in my life sweated as much as during that class.

Partially because of the amount of sweat I thought the time was almost up. I checked the time: only halfway.
ARE YOU SERIOUS? Did time stand still? This can't be! Damn you time!

Because of this the second half hour was double so hard. I am proud of myself because I stuck with it. Like a pro. (Even when an old lady mooned me, that was very disturbing).

All proud I returned home, took a hot shower and went straight to bed. Well, almost straight to bed...

A couple of days later, I surprised myself even more! With my D-day only 1.5 months away I knew I had to get busy. I came home from work, changed my outfit, blended me a spinach-carrot shake and went out the door. Music in my ears, my running app on stand by and there I went. A slow jog, all good. But this was much harder to keep up than the body combat class. I thought it was especially difficult to get my breathing under control in the cold weather. Yes,  I think it's cold here in the Netherlands! I know it's not nearly as cold as it should be and there are other parts in the world that are being tortured by blizzards, etc. But I have Caribbean blood! Anything below 15 degrees Centigrade is cold to me!

But despite the hardship I persisted and I ran. Okay, I jogged.

And why I am so happy you ask?

I jogged my first kilometer in 7 minutes!

Stop laughing!

Last time I jogged it took me 10 minutes to complete 1k! And I didn’t even practice in between!
So I think it's something to be very proud of!

I'm no Speedy Gonzalez. Not yet. But I have good faith in crossing that damned finish line!
On my own strength.
With my lungs still inside my body.
Alive!

To be continued…

As long as I get on that damn plane. We got a train and plane to catch!
But okay we made it. Je denkt nu zeker dat ik het allemaal een beetje aandik, no I'm not. It's all real!

Yeah baby! Storm coming up? Sneeuw? Que? Sun, sun, sun!

Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
- John Denver (1966)

She is gonna wait on me. Oh yeah. Voor iedereen die een oudere broer of zus heeft: IT FEELS GOOD! Real good!

Natuurlijk gaan we even een aantal familieleden opzoeken. Could be, but don't care!

Oh the sweet, sweet joy!

Okee, back to the handbagage thingy. They're so pretty... Ik heb 0 wilskracht, I know, maar who cares.

Thank you!

But hey, ieder z'n eigen smaak I guess.

Nice. A bit to my left zie ik goodie bags. Interesting! Het zijn wel mini goody bags, maar ik zie dat het een Chanel tasje is, so the size doesn't really matter (only in this case people!). As you may have noticed let ik echt totaal niet meer op de speech .. Too distracted! Moving on.. CHRISTIAN effing LOUBOUTINS!!! How is that possible? Why can't I have a pair of those pretty puppies on my feet? Smile my prettiest smile and clap.

So not glamourous! Zonde! Speaking of: kijk even op www.luxuriousevents.nl. Let me know!

People from Glamour: thank you for Chanel!

Love,

Jazz.

Omnomnomnom...

As John Mayer puts it:

"I've done everything in my life that I wanted except to give and feel Love for my living. I don't mean roman candle firework Hollywood hot pink love. I mean I-got-your-back-LOVE!"

- John Mayer, Bold as love, Contiuum (2006)

Heerlijk!

Hmm, even laten bezinken hoor.

Ah, pfff who am I kidding?!
I just love it too damn much!

Like really… Not quite the intention I guess.
I can see is 'NO EATING'. Uhm, nee.

Rewind: say what?!

Me Jazz, me hungry.

Mister was not amused. Neither was my tummy.

Tot ik de geschrokken gezichten van mijn buren zag; they did not know dat een tiny person like me zo'n bouwvakkers geluid kon maken.
So beware.

Feeder much?

Ah toeee…Pretty Pretty please??!!*

A cupcake named perfection

This is the easiest and best recipe for chocolate cupcakes by far.

You can make an amazing impression on whoever you need to impress and they'll think you're a downright Queen of the kitchen. They don't need to know it only took you about 30mins and a good upper arm workout, that's only on need-to-know basis.

So. All you need is:

  • 100 grams of chopped pure dark chocolate. I used 63% dark chocolate, but don't worry, it'll still taste damn good.
  • 150 grams of caster sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 150 grams of butter
  • A pinch of salt and
  • 150 grams of flour

For the non edible goodies you need:

  • A sauce pan
  • A wooden spoon
  • Cupcake linings
  • Cupcake/muffin pan

No mixer?

Nope. No mixer. Saves you a lot of cleaning. All the mixing will be done by yourself!
Not as intense as a mixer, but there's no need for it! Plus, you can see it as an upper arm work out.
Saves you a trip to the gym and a guilty feeling over munching down all the cupcakes you're about to make. You can thank me later :-)
.

I know you won't believe me, but just try it.

Ok, here goes.

  1. Let the butter melt over medium heat. As soon as all the butter is melted( before the bubbles come up) add the chocolate. Stir on a low heat until completely melted.
  2. Take the pan off the stove and mix in the sugar, eggs and salt until completely resolved. As you go along you'll notice that it gets a bit harder to stir. Good, let those triceps work!
  3. Now, lastly, you add the flour. Now it really gets tough. When completely resolved, you have finished your batter.
  4. Divide in the cupcake linings And bake in about 15mins, or until a scewer comes out almost clean.

Almost? Yes, in this case almost. Don't you prefer hot chocolate cupcakes that are still a bit soft on the inside?

Let the cupcakes cool on a rack an decorate as desired.
There you have your perfection in a cup... Don't forget to share.

Jazz.

All grown up...

.. On a business trip! I feel so grown up and part of the "real world"!
Big whoop!!

As I have told you last time I got a promotion at work. One of the perks of me stepping up in the big career world is business trips. Yes, plural, tripS. First, I had to go to our office in Brussels to perform my "business magic". For 3 days.

So, last Monday my alarm made himself known at 5 in the morning. A time I only know exists when I come home from dancing and partying. It was hard. Really hard. But I guess miracles do exist because I actually made the 06.23 train without rushing. I could even spoil myself with a Venti caramal macchiato! Heaven in a big cup!
Once I was settled in my seat I finally turned into a n actual human being. How do normal people do this?! It's HARD! Luckily I have about an hour and a half to become my bubbly self again..

Because of the storm I was 1.5hrs late, so much for miracles happening because I had to rush anyway. With a trolley and a backpack and in heels.. Yeah, I'm really not cut out for trotting the Globe all by myself. I'd love to though! Still need a bit of practicing.. For all safety I just jumped in a cab at the station. Since I was already late and people were waiting for me, I didn't want to pull an Independent woman and taking the risk in getting lost..

I really had a great time at the office. Everbody was so nice ad sweet to me. The hotel booked for me was so pretty! I really felt lavishly spoilt. But of course I deserve it after all my hard work!;-)
Luckily I did not have to dine all by myself and I could eat together with a Dutch colleague based in the Belgian office. Fun, but it was even better when I got back to the hotel room and could just sit in the bath tub til the water got cold and I was a wrinkly old prune. Love it!

After a couple of days hard work it was time for me to head back home. The taxi driver didn't speak any English or French and my French isn't good enough to understand his fluent jibberjabber. Great.
So when we arrived at the station he told me something about 'ici' and 'police' and all I thought was 'what'?! After more persistent jibberjabber from his side (monsieur refused to speak any slower so I could perhaps understand him) I finally understood that he couldn't drop me off  at the usual taxi stand because there were police cars with their lights flashing. Ok. So he would stop in the middle of the freaking tram tracks so I could literally jump out, get my suitcase almost thrown at me and with a good catch I could be on my way... Awesome.. Always so polite, the French.
Anyway, I had some time to kill at the train station which, for me, means SHOPPING TIME! Of course, first of all real Belgian chocolate. I know I will get lynched if I don't bring back some to my near and dear so I dutifully started packin' some of the C-drugs. And not on the hips but in my suitcase, so I was cool with it:-). The train station has plenty of shops for me to lose track of time in, but I manage to contain myself and only buy diner for myself; some burger menu at -what is supposed to be- the Belgian equivalent of McDonalds. Only it's not. They didn't even pretend to pass their bacon off as real bacon. It really feels and tastes like fried pieces of tire. So that was an epic fail. Apart from the churros which were good comfort food.

So with half a tire-sandwich I hop on the train to get back home. Once there I feel like this overly excited puppy who needs to pee everywhere to mark his territory. Which I don't do, only drop my stuff everywhere I walk.

The hotel room was very pretty and the bed was very comfortable, but nothing beats my own bed...

As Dorothy puts it: There's no place like home.. Now I only have to get my own own pair of glittery red heels..
